AB INTRODUCTION: ASO in South Europe (SE) are generally underdeveloped with
respect to structures and resources. On-going projects funded by the
European Community seek to promote empowerment by enhancing cooperation
among such groups in Greece and SE. OBJECTIVES: 1. To provide data on
communication between ASO in SE. 2. To present a picture of the
developing networks. METHOD: 1. Overview of the work and goals achieved
by ASO involved in such projects. 2. Interviews with members. 3.
Questionnaires. RESULTS: 1. Communication limits keep these ASO in
isolation and prevent their work from being effective. This is primarily
due to restricted resources, language barriers and bad timing. 2. The
most important factor that hinders further developement of networks is
scarcity of funds. CONCLUSION: 1. Sharing experiences can facilitate the
role of ASO in SE. 2. Contacts need to continue and expand so that ASO
which are underdeveloped may include more aspects pertaining to AIDS
services. 3. More resources need to be specifically allocated for the
purpose of enhancing exchange. 4. New organizations need encouragement
and assistance to join the networks.
